Autumn has just begun, and winter is around the corner bringing dark mornings, cold fingers, and rainy days. While most people are still warm in bed, you're already cycling your first kilometers to make sure the newspaper lands on every doorstep. Respect!

To help you get through those chilly days, we’ve gathered some practical tips.

1. Dress in layers

The golden rule for winter newspaper delivery: layers, layers, layers. A thermal shirt under your sweater, topped with a thick fleece or jumper, and finished with a waterproof, windproof jacket. Stay warm, and peel off a layer if needed.

2. Protect your head, hands & feet

A warm hat and gloves are essential. You lose a lot of heat through your head, and cold hands make folding and delivering papers tricky. Choose gloves with good grip. Waterproof shoes are a must, cold feet let the chill creep into your body fast.

3. Stay visible

Shorter daylight hours mean more deliveries in the dark. Good bike lights are crucial for your safety and visibility. A reflective vest or jacket is also a smart addition.

4. Bring something warm for the road

A thermos with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate can be a lifesaver. A quick sip warms you up and gives you a small moment of joy during your route.

5. Protect your ears (and make it fun)

A hat or headband keeps your ears warm. Want to make your round more enjoyable? Pop on some headphones and listen to music or a podcast. Just make sure you can still hear traffic to stay safe.

6. Keep your bike in top shape

Winter roads are often salted to prevent slipperiness, which can damage your bike. Regularly oil your chain and check your tire tread for grip. Working brakes and lights are vital in winter.

3. Take care of yourself

Sometimes it’s so cold your face feels frozen. A thick scarf or neck warmer helps, and a bit of vaseline protects your skin. If conditions are too dangerous due to snow or ice, don’t take unnecessary risks, contact your depot holder in advance.

4. Stay positive

Yes, it’s early, dark, and cold. But without you, half the country wouldn’t get their morning paper! Put on some cheerful music, bring a warm drink, think of the cozy breakfast waiting for you and make the best of it.

In summary:

Dress warmly, stay visible, and keep going. That’s all you need to survive the cold days as a newspaper deliverer. Stay warm, stay safe, and deliver with pride. Because without you, the morning just isn’t complete!
