Frequently asked questions

1. Sign up as a newspaper deliverer

  • I don't have experience as a newspaper deliverer, is that okay?

    No problem!

You don't need experience to start as a newspaper deliverer. After you sign up, we'll connect you with your depot manager.

They will explain all the ins and outs of the job to you. You'll receive a handy app that shows you exactly where to deliver each newspaper.

You can choose your own route using the built-in Google Maps, selecting the path that suits you best.

  • Is there a minimum age to sign up?

There is a minimum age of 15 for newspaper delivery, there is no maximum age. As long as your feel fit enough, you can deliver newspapers!

  • Is there anything I am committed to when I sign up?

Your registration via our website is without obligation. You are not immediately committing to anything.

After you register, your details will be forwarded to the Depot Manager(s) in your area. They will then contact you and together, you can discuss what’s possible.

  • Do I need an ID to deliver?

Yes, if you want to work as a Newspaper Deliverer you need to be able to identify yourself using a valid ID document. This can be an ID card, passport or European identity card from one of the EEA countries.

If you come from outside of the EEA, you will need to present a valid passport and a valid residence permit with the words “work is permitted, a work permit is not required” on the back.

  • Is registration with the Chamber of Commerce required to work as a freelance newspaper deliverer?

It is not necessary to have a KvK number to work as a freelance deliverer. A newspaper deliverer only needs to register with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) if they are an entrepreneur and starting a business. The deliverer registers their sole proprietorship, partnership, or other legal form with the Chamber of Commerce and immediately receives a KvK number. The KvK forwards the details to the Tax Authority (Belastingdienst). The Tax Authority then assesses whether the deliverer qualifies as an entrepreneur for VAT and income tax purposes. The deliverer will receive their VAT identification number and a turnover tax number by letter from the Tax Authority. The VAT identification number is stated on invoices to Mediahuis Distributie B.V. The deliverer receives the invoice (including VAT) by email and can include it in their administration.

2. Earnings, Taxes & Insurance

  • What do you earn with a newspaper route?

The earnings of a newspaper route depend on the size of the area and the number of newspapers being delivered. The Depot Manager can inform you on exactly what you will earn.

For example, an hourly delivery in one neighbourhood earns €15,89, regardless of your age or work experience. Note: Everyone runs a newspaper route at their own pace. A one-hour shift does not mean that it takes you an hour to deliver your entire route. Also keep in mind that in the first week, it might take you a bit longer to deliver your papers but you will, of course, get faster and faster!

  • When and how often do I get paid?

Payments will be sent automatically to your bank account each month.

  • Do I have to pay taxes as a Newspaper Deliverer?

Whether you need to pay income tax depends on your personal situation. You are responsible for filing your own income tax return.

Income from a newspaper delivery route is usually considered income from other work. In this case, no wage tax is withheld, and you must report this income yourself to the tax authorities. Whether you are required to file a tax return depends on the amount you have earned and any other income you may have. If you are socially insured, wage tax is withheld. You will receive a payment specification for this and an annual statement no later than February 1. Whether you still need to pay additional tax depends on your total income.
For more information, you can contact the Tax Information Line at 0800‑0543

  • Am I insured as a Newspaper Deliverer?

This insurance offers coverage in case of permanent disability or death due to an event which occurs during the performance of your delivery duties. Every resident of the Netherlands is obliged to take our health insurance, so you have to take care of this yourself. Young people up to the age of 18 do not have to pay premiums.

  • As a Newspaper Deliverer, am I entitled to child benefits, student loans and social insurance?

If you want to know what your delivery activities mean for child benefits or student finance, contact the Social Insurance Bank (de Sociale Verzekering Bank) or the Education Executive Agency de Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs), formerly known as Informatie Beheergroep.

6. Other roles & positions

  • What is the role of a carrier?

Throughout the Netherlands, there are outlying areas where deliveries cannot be made on foot or by bicycle.

In these areas, newspapers are delivered by car, by a Carrier. A Carrier may also have the task of delivering the newspapers to the depots before the deliverers come to pick them up.

  • What is the role of a depot holder?

A depot holder is responsible for coordinating newspaper deliveries in a specific area.

Every morning, the depot manager receives the newspapers from the carriers, counts them, and ensures they are delivered to the right distributors on time.

Additionally, the depot holder is the point of contact for the distributors, manages the team, and assists with recruiting new distributors when necessary. In some cases, the depot holder may also be required to deliver newspapers themselves.

  • What is the role of a distributor?

A distributor supports the depot holder by preparing the newspaper routes. The distributor receives the newspapers around 4:00 AM, counts them for each route, and organizes the newspapers with any additional inserts for the deliverers.

This role offers a lot of freedom and is easily combined with other work or hobbies. The distributor works six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, and the tasks take about one hour per day.
